HSK 4 Grammar Points: The Key Patterns, With Examples
HSK 4 grammar is where you learn to say whether an action is possible, to link two ideas into one longer sentence, and to add nuance with adverbs. Potential complements, paired connectors like 不但…而且, and patterns like 越…越 are the tools that turn HSK 3 sentences into Intermediate ones.
There is no need to grab every pattern at once. Here are the ones that carry the most weight at HSK 4, each with a genuine example so the shape is clear before you start drilling.
Potential complements (can or cannot do it)
The signature HSK 4 pattern inserts 得 or 不 between a verb and its result to say whether the outcome is achievable, in the shape verb + 得/不 + result:
- 这么多作业,我今天做不完。
- Zhème duō zuòyè, wǒ jīntiān zuò bu wán.
- With this much homework, I can't finish it today.
It looks like the result complement from HSK 3 (做完, to finish), but the 得/不 in the middle is what marks possibility. Compare 听得懂 (can understand) with 听不懂 (cannot understand).
Degree complements with 得 (how well an action is done)
A degree complement also uses 得, this time to describe how an action is carried out, in the shape verb + 得 + description:
- 他汉语说得很流利。
- Tā Hànyǔ shuō de hěn liúlì.
- He speaks Chinese very fluently.
When the verb takes an object, the verb is repeated: 说汉语说得很流利. This pattern shows up constantly in HSK 4 reading and writing.
不但…而且 (not only, but also)
HSK 4 leans on paired connectors that join two clauses into one idea. 不但…而且 stacks a second, stronger point on the first:
- 她不但会说汉语,而且会写汉字。
- Tā bùdàn huì shuō Hànyǔ, érqiě huì xiě Hànzì.
- She can not only speak Chinese but also write characters.
越…越 and 越来越 (the more, the more)
Use 越…越 to link two changes that rise together, and 越来越 for a single growing change:
- 我越想越紧张。
- Wǒ yuè xiǎng yuè jǐnzhāng.
- The more I think about it, the more nervous I get.
- 天气越来越冷了。
- Tiānqì yuèláiyuè lěng le.
- The weather is getting colder and colder.
无论…都 and 只要…就 (conditions)
HSK 4 sharpens the conditionals you met at HSK 3. 无论/不管…都 means no matter what, and 只要…就 means as long as:
- 不管天气怎么样,我都去跑步。
- Bùguǎn tiānqì zěnmeyàng, wǒ dōu qù pǎobù.
- No matter what the weather is like, I go running.
是…的 (emphasizing when, where, or how)
The 是…的 frame highlights the time, place, or manner of something that already happened:
- 我是坐飞机来的。
- Wǒ shì zuò fēijī lái de.
- I came by plane.
More patterns to know
Beyond the big structures above, HSK 4 introduces a set of high-frequency connectors and adverbs worth recognizing:
- 一…就 - as soon as, as in 我一到家就给你打电话。 (I'll call you as soon as I get home.)
- 连…都/也 - even, as in 他连一句话也没说就走了。 (He left without even saying a word.)
- 既然…就 - since or now that, as in 既然你不舒服,就早点儿休息吧。 (Since you're not feeling well, rest early.)
- Adverbs of tone (却, 竟然, 到底) - adding contrast, surprise, or urgency, as in 他竟然忘了我的名字。 (He actually forgot my name.)
