1. Explain it simply
跟/和 + N + 相比 means 'compared with N'. It fronts the thing you compare against.
After the frame, the main clause gives the conclusion: 跟去年相比,今年冷多了.
相比 sits right after the noun, and the whole frame comes before the main clause.
This differs from 跟一样 (sameness); 相比 introduces a contrast you then evaluate.
2. Show examples
跟去年相比,今年冷多了。
Gēn qùnián xiāngbǐ, jīnnián lěng duō le.
Compared with last year, this year is much colder.
frame first, conclusion second
跟昨天相比,今天热多了。
Gēn zuótiān xiāngbǐ, jīntiān rè duō le.
Compared with yesterday, today is much hotter.
相比 stays right after 昨天
和这个相比,那个贵多了。
Hé zhège xiāngbǐ, nàge guì duō le.
Compared with this one, that one is much more expensive.
和 works the same as 跟 here
3. Share a tip
Keep 相比 right after the noun and lead with the frame - say 跟去年相比,今年冷多了, not 跟去年,今年冷多了。
