Lesson

使 (make / cause to)

1. Explain it simply

Frame: Cause + 使 + Person + result (a feeling, state, or change).

The cause is often a thing or event, and it sits before 使 as the subject.

使 is more formal and written than 让, and it links to a mental or state change.

Keep 使 between the cause and the person: 这件事使大家很高兴.

2. Show examples

这件事使大家都很高兴。

Zhè jiàn shì shǐ dàjiā dōu hěn gāoxìng.

This matter made everyone very happy.

使 links cause to feeling

好听的音乐使人放松。

使 introduces the change

3. Share a tip

Reach for 使 in more formal writing; in everyday speech 让 does the same job.
